Anybody out there using this with their kids? I have a 6th grade ds who is quite the reluctant writer, and I've tried some things here and there with him. The whole thing boils down to his needing a lot of hand-holding when it comes to writing. I have settled on this book to help both of us, as well as to have something "workbooky" for him to work on once we adapt to life w/the new baby come January.
I'm curious how you're using this book. It seems like you could just plow straight through, saving the composition section for later in the year. However, I also think it could be broken down so that pages are done from each section (Parts of Speech, Usage, Mechanics, and Composition) each week. Are there any suggestions in the Middle School Plans?

We use it - but off and on with my 5th grader. He loves math and science but hated writing. I thought it was a gentle and yet good program. We go through a bit of it in the workbook, then put the workbook aside and pull out or practice the same stuff in his other work particularly if it is something he just doesn't get quickly. We might simply ask questions in conversation. When that seems to be solidly in place, being recognized and used in other areas outside the workbook, then we go back to the next thing in the workbook and keep going like this. We do use their instruction to jump start some writing assignments but do this the same way as others. So, we did the exercises in the workbook and then put the workbook aside and practiced this in real assignments like writing about his science explorations. It seems to be working and his writing has improved significantly. I don't think it is all one thing or another but the weaving of simple skills introduced in isolation and then assignments where you look for those very things. The book is not so many pages that you end up stressed because you aren't doing it regularly, cause even putting it aside for months at a time, we never have trouble finishing - but then again, I really wasn't worried about whether or not we would finish the book. Hope this helps some.

I just love First Language Lessons Level 3 by Susan Bauer. I use it with my 6th grade reluctant writer. It is mostly grammer but also I throw in dictation. I am pleased with book and will use it again. you can look inside at CBD.com

Thanks for the feedback. After looking through the book a few times, I think I have settled on a "schedule" that will work for us. Like you, Janet, I like to use what has been learned (writing-wise) in another subject, usually history. He has a basic grasp of grammar, usage, and mechanics just from exposure over the years, so we'll probably just blow through those exercises quickly and do the composition section 1x/week or so.
Marianne, sorry I wasn't more clear in my post. I already have LoG from CHC, so I wasn't looking for something else...just curious how others have used this particular book.  Thanks for responding, though. I wasn't aware SWB had come out with more levels of FLL.

I've used CHC LOG with both girls, although the E level is the only one I haven't used yet as my oldest started with the highest one and my youngest will get there next year. However, I generally go in order. Sometimes I try to incorporate the CONTENT into a unit study we're working on, and then I'll do up some other sheets using the LOG as a guide as to what to include. Most of the time I just have her do 3-4 pages a week, and then use the review pages as "quizzes" to include in her portfolio. (We live in PA where portfolios must be turned in). With a new one arriving in January, just having a gentle workbook will probably make life a bit easier for you!

Since I had some free time to work on homeschool planning yesterday, I went ahead and made a flexible schedule for this workbook, more or less based on doing 3-4 pages/exercises per week, plus a day where we'll focus on some composition exercises. I'm anxious to get him started on the composition part now, since I know he'll need some hand-holding in this area at first...and that will be easier to do now than when the baby is here. Hopefully by that time he'll be able be more independent, as he is in his other subjects.
BTW, I really like how it's set up...seems very gentle, akin to Simply Grammar which I also have, though straightforward at the same time. In fact, I think I may use the composition section with my dd13, so she's familiar with the "5-paragraph essay."

We loved the LOG A-D books for our daughter, but there was no E, so we moved on to something else.  But I do like what we're using too, so that's good. If Book E had been written by the time she needed her next book, we definitely would have stayed with it. It really was excellent for her!
