Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm working through Handwriting Without Tears with my 5 year old daughter. I began a handwriting curriculum with her because she was so eager to write and she was constantly writing words on scratch paper using incorrect letter formation.   Her willingness is ready but her hand motor skills are not there yet. She does fine writing her letters with chalk on the slate, but now that we are doing pencil work...her letters are so wobbly because she's not holding the pencil right, even using a grip. I don't know if I should just continue and with daily practice she will develop the correct grip or should I drop the pencil work for awhile, which will mean her going off and writing words incorrectly on her own?

Thank You for reading this,

Elizabeth

Elizabeth - what about getting an eyedropper and shot glasses with food coloring and let her experiment with mixing colors. Also spooning beans, baster, tongs, tweezers, even knobbed puzzles. These are all Montessorish and there are other ideas too. We have older children who read really well but struggle with writing and we have seen huge improvement with this. All these things develop muscles used for writing but sort of isolate different parts of it. Also, believe it or not, window washing. My almost 8 yo has been doing a lot of this kind of thing by choice and it is having a huge impact on his writing. I expected it to help, but I have been surprised by the extent of it - and also by the fact that this child chooses this stuff over and over and over. I'd also say art - insets or drawing large, etc. are great. If she is wanting to write actual letters, personally I'd stick to just staying with chalk for a while.
