I just bought First Language Lessons for my 2nd and 1st graders to do together. I like the look of it and the fact that I will have to be more involved. With LOG, I have the bad habit of letting them work on their own without paying attention to how well they get the concepts.

I am wondering about First Language Lessons, Level 3 for my 4th grader. Has anyone looked at this? I was wondering how it would compare to LOG and Sonlight's new LA program.

I can't speak about Sonlight, but I have seen First Language Lessons and had a suggestion for something that you may want to look into as well - the language arts materials available through Hillside Education. Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lessons (both originally by Emma Serl, a turn of the century teacher) have been re-worked by Margot Davidson at Hillside, and are in the Charlotte Mason style, with a mixture of grammar, narration, creative writing, copywork, dictation, memorization, etc. Primary Language Lessons is already available and can be completed either half in 2nd and half in 3rd or entirely in 3rd grade, and Intermediate Language Lessons (due out in August, I believe) is for grades 4, 5 and 6. Both books are wonderful - I own the re-worked version of PLL and the original of ILL, and have seen wonderful results with them with my own dc.

It's been several years, but I tried using ILL with my oldest, using MODG's lesson plans. There were parts I found confusing, pages I honestly didn't even know what we were supposed to do. It wasn't his style to start with, but even though I like the CM feel to it, it seemed vague.

Have the books been changed much? Is there more instruction for the teacher? First Language Lessons seemed to be similar but a little more concrete in terms of what the assignment is. Maybe I am just a little slow.

I do not know what new revised ILL looks like, since it is due out in August. I can say that I did not use them in conjunction with the MODG plans, I just used the "Notes to the Teacher" at the introduction of the book as my guide. However, Margot does post to this board, so maybe you could send her a pm and ask her? You are right, though, that the lessons are not "scripted" like First Language Lessons (I recall their lessons being outright scripted), but it could be that at this point in your homeschool experience, ILL is not as confusing for you? Again, I cannot say what changes Margot has made to the new ILL, but the work she did on PLL was really wonderful, not confusing, imho.

Margot's revision of Emma Serl's work is wonderful -- the Primary Language Lessons I'm using this year and the ILL I'm sure will be just as wonderful. She modernized the fonts, pictures (using color) and generally made it a much more user-friendly book.

I too tried the original of ILL a few years back and both my then 12 yod and I couldn't stand it! It was too old-fashioned and just didn't look fun or interesting.

So, if PLL is anything to go by, ILL revised is going to be a wonderful boon for us!

I ordered the Hillside version of Primary Language Lessons through Adoremus Books because I had a discount code. I've also seen used copies at the Cathswap Yahoo group.

I've been using FLL and LOG together for the last 2 years. I bought PLL to use with my dd this year since FLL3 wasn't around. However, when my dd found out that FLL3 was available this summer, she asked that I continue with that program.

FLL3 is set up to use 3 x's a week. It is a similar set up to FLL. However, we won't be using LOG this year since there is a workbook for this level. Many lessons include reviews. Others just have a new topic introduced. FLL3 does include diagramming beginning at Lesson 11.   

Since I already own PLL, I'm considering using the Picture Lessons and Observation Lessons the other two days of the week.
