Hi,
After having my entire curriculum planned out, and then having a huge change of heart and returning the whole thing (gulp) - I am now back to square one.
So - I need opinions.
I am trying to decide between using Language of God B by CHC or Primary Language Lessons for ds 8.
Opinions, please?

I don't know how much my opinion counts because I've never used the Language of God books, so take this with a grain of salt. I will be using PLL for my dd who is 8 this year. I just thought it was such a gentle approach to things. I think that there's enough grammar in it for a young child. I also think my dc learn more about language from things like copywork, dictation and even the "art of conversation" (which is included in PLL) than they learn from workbooks. That's just my .02 .

We use PLL and really enjoy it. I,agree,it takes a gentle approach which makes it easy on child and Mom.
I did look at Language of God at the Milwaukee Catholic Conference and was very impressed. I do think either way you will have a good year.
Have I confused you enough already?
I will quit typing.

I just got PLL from the library this week (you might try yours to look thru it) and have been looking thru it. At first glance I thought it was too simple and didn't cover much, but after really looking thru it I can see it's a gem of a book.
I think this would be great for both my kids-my DD will be 6 and bit ahead of "grade level" and my DS will be 9 but a bit behind in LA so I think I can do this with both of them. My son can do much of this orally which is a plus too.
I might still add in some Mad Libs or other grammar for DS but I have to say I'm impressed with it.

Laura
I have used both with my dc. And in their opinion Primary Language Lessons won hands down. They love it and beg for more all the time. Now you have to look at where my dc are coming from they are used to doing things orally mostly and very gently. We do Emma Serl's books orally. Language of God for them was too schooly. Now I didn't think so but they did. They didn't like it and were really unhappy.
It depends on you and your dc's past way of doing things alot IMO. Others may see things differently. But that was my dc reaction.

My kids preferred Seton over LoG and I'm hoping they'll enjoy PLL from Hillside as much as or more than Seton. They really appreciate the beauty of Seton and Hillside. They are very excited to be using Hillside next year (or should I say this year?). They keep coming to my desk when I leave it and stroking the books.
Although *some* are rather hoping to have an ILL from Hillside... Just a hopeful sigh of expectation, Margot! NOT nagging here. Nope not me. I'm known for my patient wait for Catholic books.

Ditto what Erin said. They are both great - BUT it depends on the child. We had the opposite experience from Erin. I loved PLL and started using it. My ds hated it - couldn't get him to clarify exactly what it was that he didn't like but my idea was that it was a bit more on the "girly" side - ie no pictures to think about related to manly activity. The other possible reason he wasn't thrilled might have been that he hates waiting for me and this involved so much discussion. He hates to talk. We also had trouble getting him to do any kind of formal oral narration. I had to be very sneaky about this and have conversations at table that he would pop in on once in a blue moon. (When he says something it is usually to the point without elaboration). Now as much as this son hated the mechanics of writing (just having a pencil in his hand), he much, much preferred LOG. He is more of a "lets get to the point sort of guy."

I used LOG with a boy who disliked ILL (after using it for a year). I truly regret that decision now. I would have been better skipping the more feminine lessons and sticking with ILL because the integrated approach really facilitated learning. LOG seemed to be too easy to forget once the lesson was passed and even though the lessons are wonderfully Catholic, it just didn't feel integrated enough to make sense to the child in the bigger picture. After using both, I am convinced that PLL/ILL are the way to go. When we have finished ILL in the 6th grade, we will use Easy Grammar along with Lingua Mater and other written narrations/compositions for 7th and 8th. I can't wait for the new ILL to come out!

Does anyone know when the new ILL will be coming out? I heard long ago that it was in the works, but haven't heard anything since.
I have to agree with those who prefer PLL/ILL over LoG. We have used both at different times, and PLL/ILL are really much better. They children learn and practice so many more skills using the Serl books than LoG. I also found that my dc quickly forgot what was being taught in LoG, but the PLL/ILL lessons have really stuck. My younger ds is an excellent writer due to using them, and will be going on to Lingua Mater this coming year.
Hope this helps!

Oh Martha! That is so precious!!!

Oh - you are so patient, thank you!!! I have finished the 4th and 5th grade sections and have them in the proofreading rounds, but I am still laboring (as in having labor pains) with the 6th grade section. I am really reworking it so it better flows into LM for 7th while trying to keep the flavor and style. I am toying with separating the book for those that just want the 6th grade.
As to a release date . . . it will be August . . . sometime . . . but I promise in time for the new school year. My copy editor just had a baby (after adopting two because she wasn't able to conceive ), so that has slowed me down a bit. I have just today found someone reliable for proofreading, so off we go.
As for PLL vs LoG, I use them together!
Thank you all!
Blessings

Oh darn... and I just bought a copy of ILL! If I had known Hillside was coming out with its version, I would have waited!
I have both LoG and PLL (and ILL for my 4th grader) and both seem to work well. I was a bit put off at first with PLL, because I couldn't see that we were really LEARNING anything. However, now that my oldest is using ILL, I can see that the "kinder, gentler approach" does have great merit. I love having poetry to memorize, as well as copywork and artwork discussions! My kids enjoy it because it's not laborious, and there's something new every day.
LoG is more to the point, and my 2nd grade daughter loves it. I thought it would be more useful since it seems to narrow down "this is what we are learning right now," but in reality my other kids just zip through it quickly and I'm not sure how much they are retaining.
So, we use both, and I'll judge as the year goes by which one seems to be sinking in better.
[I tend to combine things and use the "best of both worlds" approach quite often. My kids have learned how to read with "100 Easy Lessons" coupled with "Writing Road to Reading." Eclectic, perhaps, but works for us!]

I just finished using PLL this past year with my 9 yo. She loved it. We did some of the work orally and some of it written. We skipped the poetry memorization since we already memorize poems from LB's Wreath and Laurel book. Its a gentle approach but its also very meaty. Its never boring because each day is different. I HIGHLY recommend it.
And I'm bummed that I didn't know a new ILL was coming out!! I just received mine last week!!! Oh well. At least the page numbers will match up with my syllabus!!

We used LOG A and B for my boys last year and while it was easy and straight forward, I know the rentention was not what I would have liked. We are changing this year either to PLL or some ETC/SL thing.

The lesson numbers will be the same, though. The MODG syllabus I was working from (to know which lessons to leave intact) only referenced the lesson numbers, so there should be no problem using the new text with the syllabus.

OK, ILL is at the printer (since last Monday), and today they gave me an "end date" of August 9th. I was really hoping for August 6th, but that's not too bad, I guess. I'm still agonizing over the price to charge for it, (because I just can't get it under $30.00), but it should be on the website in a few days to preorder. Those coming to the 4Real conference will be able to see it fresh off the presses!
Thanks for your patience,
Margot

I am slightly confused by all the acronyms being used. Is the PLL referred to the one by Emma Serls? Is the PLL/ILL from Hillside different? What about the Language Lessons book by Wise or Bauer; a new edition of the primary version just came out within the last year. Any reviews on that book?
