Hi,
I would like to find some books for my soon to be 7yob. He picked up reading quickly, got into reading Bears on Hemlock Mountain, Asterix etc. but now doesn't want to read anything (he still does if I ask him but he's not very happy about it). I wanted him to keep doing some reading because he caught on so well and I would love to have some books that might capture his attention!!
I don't know what level he would be?? I gave him Stuart Little and he new all the words on the first three pages, but it exhausted him and the novel format I think overwhelmed him. He seems to be able to read almost any word, even our evening liturgy.

Is he interested in information type books? My boys at this age enjoy the First Steps into Reading books. Ones like Pompeii and Tut's Mummy. They also enjoy the DK Readers which were created with boys in mind, lots of information there as well.

Yes, yesterday at the library I grabbed him a couple of those on weather. He picked up the one on hurricanes and started reading. Yay!!

My 7 year old loves the picture bible from Bethlehem Press, TinTin books and the Natl Geographic Science chapter books (interesting text but not too much and awesome pictures) - his favorite of the 3 our library has was "Weedy Sea Dragons" by O'Sullivan. There are lots in the series so hopefully your library will have some. I looked online to purchase but they are really pricey.

Thank you Margaret. I will check out those at the library!! My 6yob (soon to be 7) loves tin tin and asterix but likes the pictures more!!

My children both prefer nonfiction; I make up for this by reading good children's literature aloud as part of the school day. Then I don't worry when all dd wants to check out are horse and dolphin books...

Jim Arnosky has a Clinkleroot nature series that has some fun books my son likes
Has he read Frog and Toad, Mouse Tales, etc?
Nate the Great series-not classics but fun

Pleased to hear he found something he likes. I thought of some other light reading, the Magic Tree House books. At the risk of tomatoes I will say I'm not a huge fan I find them very light, however a couple of them are good for a fledgling reader.

I always had trouble picking books for my son. It was hard because he was not that interested in the books that his big sister devoured. I picked books based on his current interests--first anything dinosaurs, then dragons, cats, etc. It also helped to take him on a tour of different sections in the children's library. Usually his picks were things I never would have considered.
If your son liked books on weather, look for titles by Seymour Simon. He has some awesome picture books and a science chapter book series. There is also The Magic School Bus Chapter books.
You might also find something at the Guys Read site, run by Jon Scieszka. Be forewarned, some of the Guy picks are definitely not Mom picks, but there is a good section About Guys Read that helped me make better guesses at what my son might like.

Thank you all. I will be off to the library again this week (the bigger one this time!!)
He read all the Arnold Lobel ones lots last year (we love Arnold Lobel), and he has read some of the Nate the Greats.
When my daughter was reading one of the Magic Treehouse books she began to tell my husband about it: he looked at it a little and found them strange and sort of occultic. I asked him yesterday when I read the suggestion and we decided maybe we should have a better look....
