Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

You ladies may already know about these resources but I just discovered them tonight. Ruth Heller, who also writes science books, writes living books about parts of speech. THere are books on nouns, adjectives, adverbs, preps, interjections, etc. They have beautiful illustrations. It suggests ages 4-8 but I know my 10 year old will enjoy them too. Search on amazon under Ruth Heller and it should come up. (Sorry I don't know how to link it from here) or you can click the link from my blog under living language arts books.

These are absolutely fantastic ... I did a blog post about the 8 I found -- now I have to track down inexpensive versions of them for us to own!

I think they're lovely and cover so many concepts (conjunctive adverbs, for instance) so will work for quite a while!

Wow, thanks for posting this. I have 2 of these but didn't realize there were so many more. We'll be looking at our library and maybe add them to our wish list of school books for next year!

We love that series.

Another "fun" series is written by Brian P. Cleary. The pictures aren't as pretty, but they're still worth checking out at the library:
Hairy, Scary, Ordinary: What is an Adjective?
Dearly, Nearly, Insincerely: What is an Adverb?
I and You and Don't Forget Who: What is a Pronoun?
How Much Can a Bare Bear Bear? What are Homonyms and Homohpones?

and several others.

Thanks Janette for the Cleary post -- I remembered we'd looked at something last year, and couldn't remember the author....These are great too.

After re-reading the Heller books yesterday, we topped it off with a viewing of the classic Grammar Rock from the Schoolhouse Rock dvd. Remember "Conjunction Junction" and some of those others -- "Lolly, lolly, lolly get your adverbs here"....anyway we were singing about verbs, and adverbs and conjunctions all day. My 4 yo now knows what an interjection is too

We love the Cleary books, too.

I haven't used the Heller books, though, so thank you! I just checked our library and they have several of them.

Another fun book (about punctuation): Eats, Shoots & Leaves: Why, Commas Really Do Make a Difference!

Thank you! My library system has some of these so I just reserved them-of course they didn't have pronouns which is what we're working on but they most of the rest.
Can't wait to read them and some of the science books.

Thank-you, Lisa, for reminding me that I really wanted the Heller books!

I saw them (drooled over them, actually) a few years back in the Michael Olaf catalogue, but my dd (now 6) was too young, so I put it off. I completely forgot about it until now, bless your heart !!!
