I am interested in hearing about how you assign your copywork? Do you "pre-print" out the work to be copied? Write in on a chalkboard? Have the children copy it straight from the book?

It depends on the source for us. Usually it is out of a book that they can copy from. Other times, I find poems online that I write out by hand (I would just print them out, but our printer has been broken for over a year). I wouldn't put them on the white board or something on the wall, because they get frustrated looking up and down.

I print mine on pieces of paper and put them in a jar and we draw them out. Sometimes, I will pick a specific one if it relates to something we are studying.

I use a software program called StartWrite. I type in what I want them to copy (sometimes my choice, sometimes their own narration)and print it out for them. The program leaves lined spaces under each typed line so they just copy word for word right under each line. I bought the program almost two years ago, based on the recommendation in Elizabeth's book, and it is the best $40 I have ever spent!

Paula, I'm glad you posted this. I've been wondering if there was such a thing and kept meaning to ask. See? If you procrastinate or forget long enough, it eventually takes care of itself. 
Right now, I just write out the words myself. But my kids are young and right now there are only 2 who are writing, so there's not A LOT.

I do what Paula does, but I use Educational Fontware's software. It's actually a font program that you load onto your word processor.

I was just reading through some of the handwriting posts in the archives.

And then started to click on some of Educational Software's fonts. I had no idea there were so many options in manuscript and cursive! Have I been under a rock? Or were y'all astonished about this when you began HS?
What do most people use? or is it such a variety?

I use Getty Dubay with my kids. Oldest ds had been in public school through 5th grade and they didn't care about handwriting at all, saying everybody types now. He had horrible writing. I like that the GB cursive is not that different from the manuscript, it just joins the letters together. it's also very easy for kids to read (my ds still can't read his grandmother's tiny spidery handwriting well)
I use Startwrite software for copywork, etc. but use the Getty Dubay workbooks to actually teach the letters. Ds14 still gets copywork weekly to remind him of proper letter formation and not to get sloppy. The 5 and 7 yos are doing the 2nd book now.

yes, here is the site I purchased mine from
Startwrite and it shows an example of the screen, with the different options to change (size, font, dotted, etc.) if you click on samples it shows all the fonts they have. They call Getty-Dubay Italic and the only thing I've noticed that is not exactly like GB is the k has a loop in it - none of GB's letters have loops even in cursive (except O's of course!).

Yes. For smaller children, anyway.
On page 68 of Real Learning....chapt "Teaching writing"
"Copy work and dictation have their place. For small children, copy work is handwriting practice: first a letter, then a word, then a phrase, then a verse. All are done to the best of the child's ability....."
"As a child matures, copy work is the careful study of literature. It is a child's chance to become familiar with the text of great writers, word by word and phrase by phrase. A child copies the work and in doing so learns the intricacies of it on an intimate level."
This is how I understand it......

I just read about a program like this in The Latin Centered Curriculum. I am simply amazed. I do not write Maria's copywork out, and I need to because she does better with the actual letters rather than straight from the book.

OK....I ordered Startwrite a few days ago, just installed it and started playing around with it. It's so neat!
I just had dd dictate a thank you note for a birthday present, printed it out, and now she's tracing the letters, and then will draw a picture on the bottom of it. So fast! Love it!

We use Handwriting Without Tears here. Looks like Educational Fontware is the way to go for us! This is an area I've been pretty lax in.  It's really becoming noticeable in my ds's poor handwriting!

I just installed some of Educational Fontware's fonts and have liked it a lot so far. I chose them for their specialty fonts (they have a font of sign language letters which dc liked) and that they can be used with many different word processors. I look forward to getting more use from these fonts and jump starting our copywork.
