Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

all winter we have been keeping our feeder filled with sunflower seeds, this is our first year of bird watching. we have mostly attracted the common sparrow and an occasionaly great tit. (sorry, thats really its name ) we ran out of seed and for a few weeks the feeder was empty. i refilled it a week ago, and the birds just havent come back. i see them around, in the grapevines and in the trees, but they are not coming to eat hardly at all. any idea why? does it have to do with the warming weather? spring fever? or is it egg laying time? just wondering

Monica, anytime I leave my feeders empty for a length of time, it can take a while for the birds to come back. They have probably been off scouting out other sources of food, especially since at this time of year when there is not much available to them naturally.

If you are hoping to attract more than just one or two types of birds, you might try a wider variety of food - like a thistle feeder (finches) and suet cage (woodpeckers, nuthatches). Just these few feeders, placed near shrubbery or branches (so the birds can fly in and out quickly and safely) should bring in some new faces.

You bring up an interesting point about the time of year - are they busy doing other things? I don't know the answer to that, but I would think they would always be intersted in eating.

Funny, but ever since the hawk ate the pigeon a while back , the only bird at my feeder (suet only at this point) has been a mockingbird. Brave fellow.

There are several new cats in the 'hood, too. For us, I'm pretty sure it's a predator issue.

I have heard some mating activity over the past week, especially in the cardinals, who used to be frequent visitors.
