We have had bugs in our learning room this past week. We think they came from a birch branch we had hanging over a doorway (which is now outside). The first few creatures looked like larvae of some kind, but the last few were adults. With stingers. I posted a picture at my blog and would love any help in identifying it. Thanks!

Looks like it's an Evaniid wasp. They are parasites of cockroach eggs (one wasp per egg). I am not sure if it's good or bad that you found one.

OK, MacBeth, I am going to try to stay calm while I digest the fact that this bug might just be related to *gasp* cockroaches.

We are pretty sure they came out of the birch branch, so:

A. Should we get rid of the rest of the wood we have stacked under our deck???

and,

B. Should we worry that these bugs left anything behind (in my house) now that we've gotten rid of that branch?

Shudder.

Yea, I was going to say it looks like some sort of parasitic wasp. I'd get rid of the branch (or fumigate it) in case there are some bugs left that were not parasitized.
The long thing at the back that looks like a stinger is the ovipositor. These tiny wasps are *usually* harmless (but then so are lady bugs and I've been bitten by them!LOL!).

Oh, I wouldn't worry. Hey, if they are parasites of roaches, it'll limit the number of roaches. If you have not seen any roaches indoors, it's really not an issue--just keep an eye out. As Theresa suggests, get rid of the branch, and maybe fumigate in the spring.

On wood under the deck, though...isn't this an issue with rot, carpenter ants, long-horned beetles, wood boring beetles, termites, etc.? I'm thinking you might want to move the wood for a number of reasons.

Well, our deck is not wood it is Trex ... but just to be safe, I think we will move it.
