Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Yesterday on our field excursion along the South Platte River, we found shells lying in the snow near the water. As we investigated near the lake there were hundreds of clamshells, some with clams still inside! I have lived in Colorado for 32 years and never knew clams lived here. I'm still quite amazed! They are Asian Clams and are not native to the United States and apparently are quite invasive.

The American Coots that were swimming near by were enjoying them. They looked splendid with their white beaks, black heads, and charcoal bodies against the all white backdrop of the frozen lake.

Apparently while we were intrigued by the clams, others in the park were gazing on Bald Eagles near by. The children were not disappointed in the least that we didn't spot our national emblem--they had found clams-- something they had never seen before except in clam chowder!
