Helped our first turtle this year across the road.
It looked like a box turtle, but instead of yellow/gold markings, it had red markings. Anyone know if this a variety of box turtles, or another type entirely.
We discovered him on our way to church. As I came around the curve, he was there in the road and I slammed on the brakes. The neighbor was distressed at the sudden stop. Brigid in a very mundane voice just said , "Turtle." Poor kid, she's been thrown around in the back of the car for as long as she can remember . Of course now she gets out of the car instead of me bringing the creature to her for inspection.

I the red on the head and legs as well as the shell.

(Did not dally long in the curve of the road--too many teenagers drive the curves then accelerate for the straight section, and we were on our way to church so no place to keep him during mass.)

I read (since there are not enough box turtles here for me to really know) that the males have red eyes, while the females have brown eyes. It looks to me like red coloration is a typical subspecies variation, and not anything really exotic. I'd love to see one, though!
