How interesting!!!
My next-door neighbor called me over to see what fell from the sky to the sidewalk in front of him as he walked towards our house with his two darling toddlers...
It was a headless, eviscerated, pigeon open to the sternum, with all the meat picked off the bones. My poor neighbor thought he was in an episode of the X-Files! He said it fell out of thin air, but I'm pretty sure that this was the work of a hawk or falcon. I have seen both red-tails and peregrines in the 'hood over the years.
I think my poor neighbor does not believe me.

Very interesting, MacBeth!
Our ospreys leave the most interesting piles of fish skeletons all over our neighbors' boats. There is a plus side to having one of the smaller boats with a shorter mast in this marina...

What no picture? This is very cool!
I had the same thing happen to me once, but it was a lizard that fell instead of a bird. I couldn't wait to show my mom.

It could also have been from an eagle or an owl. That's what we get here in MN!

That's so cool! We've only seen birds of prey pick things up. (Of course, people around here think I'm just a little too "into" homeschooling...)

Our neighborhood is the territory of a red-shouldered hawk. (We finally made a positive ID on Sunday!) We've seen it carry nearly dead squirrels, but that's it. I hadn't thought to look on the ground for its leftovers, but that's a great idea.
We feel honored to be in the hawk's territory. School grinds to a halt if we see or hear her (him?).

I don't think I'd appreciate such a gift from the sky.

I think the kids did!
I looked up into the tree above the spot where the pigeon fell, and I think I see young hawks in a nest. Now, I have not confirmed this (scrambling for my binocs), but I heard hawkish sounds, and I had seen a pair of peregrine falcons circling around the village last week. This would be news, indeed. I'll keep everyone posted!

Oh, a nest would be delightful. A pair of red-tailed hawks nested in a tree across the street from Tim's grandmother's house. We loved watching when we visited. The many doves in the area were not as excited about the newcomers as we were, though.

Young hawks in a nest in December/January? On Long Island? (that's where this is happening right?) I know you all have been warmer than usual this year but isn't nesting raptors pushing Spring a bit?
No wonder Alice started a A New Springtime!
