Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have four deer that have decided that our yard (and everything edible in it ) belong to them. I was out working in the yard one day and saw them so I held really still so as not to scare them away. One of them saw me and started stomping his/her foot on the ground and making some weird, loud noises. Now maybe I am just being overly cautious on the heels of six of our neighbor's dogs came over to our yard and killed our cat in front of the children, but I was wondering if deer would get more aggressive than just stomping their feet.

I would not worry too much about the aggressive nature of the deer most of the time...they tend to be pretty shy, though in the mating season (now), the males might become a bit of a nuisance, and might charge, though it's rare. I'd try to keep them away.

The bigger issue is their droppings. If you have little ones who crawl around, or produce that grows on the ground (or fruit that falls, like apples and peaches), make sure that they are washed (hands and fruit) before they are eaten. E. coli from the droppings can be quite dangerous.

Thanks MacBeth. I noticed a lot of droppings all over the yard yesterday when I was mowing. I will move those and make sure the kids wash up well when they come in from playing.

Patty -

That snorting/stomping stuff is the deer's early warning system to let the others hear and feel that there is danger present. They are not violent ever, except bucks to one another in a show of strength and manliness in determining which of them will be allowed to mate with the area does, but this usually happens in October or November.

Yes, they love to eat many things that we find beautiful; translate that to our gardens, whether those are ornamental, herb, or vegetable. It is actually not so difficult to find things they prefer not to eat and then plant only those things. You might Google "deer resistant plants" to find lists of those things. For instance, they think your garden of tulips and lilies is a salad bar, but daffodils are poisonous to them and avoided. With so many beautiful things to choose from to plant, you can enjoy a lovely garden and the deer will just add to the natural beauty, rather than ingesting it.

Peace,
Nancy

If you go to the local beauty/barber shop and ask for some hair cuttings, you can spread them around the outside of the yard/garden and it should keep them away.

I am not sure how much you need for it to be effective though.

Hey! I actually found a website that says you can put it in mesh bags and hang it or place it around the garden. You can also use animal waste YUK! or bars of soap.

Good luck.

Blessings,
Krisann
