Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone come across the science series that starts with
George's Secret Key to the Universe?

I stumbled upon it on Amazon, and it gets very good reviews overall. It is a living book type format, by Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy.
I did a google search and found that many homeschoolers use this series. I could not find it in a search here, though.

ANy thoughts?

Having not read the books, I would just be cautious. Hawking is an unabashed atheist leaving no room for a creator in his worldview.

Yes- his name does send up warning bells. I was surprised to find so many HSers in my google search recommending the book. It would be very helpful if I could get a look at it.

Hmm... maybe back to ILL...

We have been looking for good "living" astronomy books - so please let us know if you get a chance to preview the book!
Thanks!

OK- I have it on order from ILL. It could take a few weeks to get to me.

The thing that makes me want to look into it more is the reviewers saying what an excellent job it does explaining astronomy and physics.

I'll just have to see, though... I'm hoping that's it's just a great story that teaches science and not a new-age/atheist-type vehicle.

I just got this book from the library and read the first few chapters. I definitely think this is the sort of book that a family would need to discern.
First of all, George (the main character) doesn't have a great attitude toward/about his parents. His parents are radical environmentalists who think that science/technology are bad for the planet. Environmentalism is a big theme in the book. One of the scientific things they discuss early in the book is that our bodies are made from the same particles of exploded stars from long ago - conservation of matter. I don't personally know much about that kind of science.
It is an easy to read chapter book with a compelling story and interesting science thrown in.
I hope that (partial) review was helpful!
