Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My oldest is very interested in inventors and hands-on type activities. Has anyone used these books? While he might be interested in the bios, I would probably be more interested in the hands-on activities that we could do together. I was thinking of doing inventor study once a week like composer study or picture study as part of our science (which is almost exclusively nature study right now). These books say grades 4-7, but I have seen reviews of people who used them with younger children.

Alternatively, do you have any other books you could recommend? Thanks!

They are good for the activities and hands-on projects. We like to use them because they have them for so many topics, but mostly for the activities as you mention. The text defineitly is for older students and you should review before using. You do have to be careful with many of these Chicago Press "----For Kids" books as they tend to be have a slant/bias to revisionist history, the Church as oppressor of science, and be "politically correct." So be aware of that in certain texts - da Vinci is one of them (he Church as oppressor of science). You can usually tell by the topic if it will have those elements (especially those dealing with science, colonialism, race). You can generally avoid that using just the activities, and it isn't always heavy in the text, but does exist.

I like the "Build It Yourself" series as well - some of the same issues mentioned but less. They have several on inventors.

The Mike Venezia series on different inventors is good. There are quite a few nice picture book biographies of inventors.

There is this older thread - American Inventors which has ideas. In rereading it I see I have more biographies to add to it that have been published in the last 5 years.

These are short bio/timeline compilations, not activity books - but are good references.
Hooray for Inventors
Picture Book of Great Inventors
Illustrated Time Line of Inventions and Inventors

Mistakes that Worked
is a fun book to go along with the inventor theme.

The segments are short and very interesting. We read and narrated quite a few of these last year. There are no activities in the book, but there is a lot of food for thought!
