Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My son Ben (almost 10) started a mounted bug collection last summer. We do not have the least idea how to do this "correctly". I bought a clear plastic box with lid, cut some foam to fit inside and he has been mounting his finds in it, using straight pins from my sewing box.

Last summer, he was only mounting bugs that he found dead. Now he is interested in capturing them solely for the purpose of mounting them.

Do you have any advice on how to do this?

Is there a way to quickly kill a bug so it does not have to fly around in a bucket with a bag on top for 48 hours ?

Why do I think this is cruel ?

Why am I not Spring Cleaning ?

My sister took entomology in 4-H and the easiest way to kill the bug in to put it in the freezer. No hassle with chemical drops on head or soaked cotton balls. If you are going to enter the collection in a show there are specific sizes/rules for the display box but if it is for fun, have fun!

Jennifer,
I have a friend who told me they come back to life when they thaw. Do you have any experience with this? How long do they have to be frozen before they are "surely dead" ?

Depends on the species. Some do quite well in the freezer . A killing jar is sure fire, but I know what you mean...I feel bad, too, leaving the creatures to die. Put a moth ball in the jar for faster results.

Once they are dead and stored, don't forget to put moth flakes or balls in with them, as insects like to eat dead insects.

I have not heard about the moth flakes/balls for killing or preserving. Thanks MacBeth!
