Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just discovered some picture books by William T. George that only one has been mentioned here. I found it on our library shelves by happenstance, as the title seemed familiar like the Smithsonian's Backyard series.

Box Turtle at Long Pond by William T. George, illustrated by Lindsay Barrett George

Beaver at Long Pond

We read these two last night. The boys were completely engrossed. The illustrations are amazingly realistic. The stories follow the box turtle through the day, and the beaver through one night. There's no dialogue, but written so well. The turtle goes through several times where he is trying to find food and because he's too slow or other circumstances he can't find much until the end of the story. The boys breathed a sigh of relief at the end, grateful that turtle was able to eat a bunch of grapes. The beaver had a "close call" when a boy and his dog come fishing in the early morning, and my boys were both saying "That was close!"

Fishing at Long Pond and Christmas at Long Pond are the other two books. I just asked for them. The Christmas book has been mentioned here before by Tina. I presume these follow people more than the animal.

These books were so similar to the Smithsonian's Backyard series, but were printed before that series. We love these, but our library only has TWO, so I need to find a way to get more for our reading.

I'd also classify these books similar to the Mousekin series by Edna Miller. Late have we loved thee, O Mousekin! But he is dearly loved here.

Some of Jim Arnosky's titles would fit in this genre, like Raccoons and Ripe Corn and Rabbits and Raindrops and Every Autumn Comes the Bear.

Any other recommendations that are similar in tone and genre?

Those first two books, Jenn, are the exact ones I was looking for in my library. They had been "purged"! Can you imagine?

William George's wife, Lindsey Barrett George, also writes some nature picture books that I think are quite good. My favorite is In the Snow Who's Been Here?. There is a whole series of the Who's Been Here books. The Who's Been Here books feature beautiful, accurate nature drawings, and also positive, warm relationships between children and parents ( although these relationships are only alluded to briefly). She is one of my favorite children's authors.
