Hello, all,
I'm so proud of my dd I just had to brag a little bit. At her suggestion, we headed outside this morning to sketch our blooming apple tree. (We are south of Tucson and it is 80 degrees today--who needs a vacation.) The tree had many, many happy bees inside the lovely pink blossoms. As we first sat down with our clipboards, a large black flying beetle also approached the tree. Katie ran back inside for a few minutes and came back out. This happened a few times. Finally I asked if she'd feel more comfortable to sketch inside looking out the window.
She took a deep breath and said firmly, "No. I've decided to face my fears and I'm staying out." We proceeded to sketch side by side. After some progress on my apple tree sketch, I looked at hers. She wasn't sketching the tree, but a single bee! I commented and she replied, "Once I finish, I really won't be afraid." One last note, on her sketch she put the scale of the bee at 3".
I am proud of her for both suggesting the sketching and for facing her fears! Thanks to CCM for getting us out.

How sweet! If only I could use that technique to get rid of my phobic fear of wasps (after being stung) and roaches! What a grown up attitude from your young girl!

This is so sweet, Victoria. Thanks for sharing!
Speaking of fears...I saw my first diamondback, live and in person, yesterday. I was walking on a path near Aiden's baseball practice field. I hadn't known about this path ahead of time so was unprepared (wearing my sandles, no sketch clipboard, etc.) I was walking with another mom and Devin when the mom yelled having almost stepped on the snake! I had walked within inches of it but hadn't seen it. To be honest, at that moment I wasn't much in the mood to stop and sketch .
Love,

What a missed opportunity to sketch That is terrifying, Angie! In my 13 years in the southwest, I had yet to see a single snake, let alone a diamondback. Eeeeeeeek! This is the first house we've ever seen a scorpion in--and it was inside Kate's dress up clothes bin. But I try to tell myself that all areas of the U.S. have their venemous/dangerous creatures. Be careful out there!

Victoria, you story reminds me of poor Libby's first experience with a swarm of honey bees. We were outside in the back yard, and she was maybe 20 months old. My M-I-L, (may she rest in peace) went screaming into the house, and Libby was terrified. It took a Looooong time for her to get over that (more or less). At the beach on our frequent hikes she would touch nothing, especially if it moved . Now she is great about most creeping things, and sketches outside regularly, but she prefers that they stay off her immediate body.

Libby is such an incredible violinist. I will bet that her natural dislike of touching creepy crawly stinging and pinching things is God's way of protecting those precious hands.

You are cracking me up, Chari. Okay, so you don't have to be envious now because you know that unbearable heat is coming (Angie, just ignore this)
I'd give my right arm to join the CCM moms in the west. Our spring is packed with more vacation time/expense than we planned and I'm afraid any more travel this year is out of the question. But I do want to hear all the get-together details

All my serious nature study stuff would have served my IGNORANCE better by tricking me into a false sense of security, LOL! Something about my bare toes swishing casually within inches of the diamondback felt too vulnerable and...real .
Love,

Talk about ignorance, I was telling a friend about Kate's bravery. She said if tree was filled with a great many bees, they could have been Africanized bees. Can you imagine And here I was talking dd to getting closer. My goodness!
