Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

dd11 watched a teenybopper show about girl mermaids. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it. Anyway - it sparked an interest in marine biology - for the time being.

I wondered if any of you had experience with Rachel Carson's The Edge of the Sea. I was looking for something, with literary value of course, that she could read on her own. Is this what I am looking for? She is a strong reader. I'm open to other suggestions.

Michele, I'm kind of on the same boat with you. My oldest dd12 read Carson's The Sea Around Us per AO suggestion this year. She enjoyed it; there was some big bang theory explanation at the beginning but we've discussed this before and were able to move on. The kids really want to study seashells and seashore this summer for our main nature study topic and so she asked to read The Edge of the Sea. We're giving it a try.

Hi, Jenny.

Did she read the original or the Terry White version that AO also recommends?

I realized after I posted that I should back up and start with The Sea Around Us. My weird brain had assumed that book was about air!

We tried the original version and I noticed it was taking her a while to enjoy. So, I found a copy of the White version and she really picked up her reading. We compared both and it isn't that the actual writing is different but the recommended edition is full of pictures and maps. It makes the material come alive. It's like a much higher level Holling book. We highly recommend you try to get the Special Edition for Young Readers. I think this will also make the other two books in that series more approchable.

Hmm...now that I think about it, I wonder if there are similar versions for the other two books. Any one know if there are?
