Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can any of you nature lovers recommend specific books by this author? Alice, I believe you mentioned him in passing in your Cottage Garden blog recently? Which books by him has your family enjoyed?
He looks like a fascinating man!

His Amateur Naturalist is outstanding. My Family and Other Animals is a good EDITED read aloud, as are some of his other books. He was an atheist. His bother Lawrence was the author of Pope Joan (definitely not a recommended read ).

We own the Amateur Naturalist (OOP), and I enjoy looking through it for ideas on how to truly study a certain area. I also really like his account of the ways he studied nature as a young boy living on a Greek island. He, unfortunately, has an atheistic philosophy, so it is not a book I would let the children read, beyond perusing the excellent pictures and captions.

Karen Edmisten recently had a review of a movie about his life at her blog. Karen, do you think you could post the permalink to that piece?

Thanks, Alice and MacBeth for your comments. I guess I might try and find a copy of his Amateur Naturalist for me. I'm sorry to hear that he was an atheist, though he isn't anymore, huh?

Bumping this. Jenny mentioned this article at First Things which recommends My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell.

I agree with Macbeth that some editing needs to be done as a read-aloud, or wait until your child is older. But it is so delightful on how he recounts his ways of observing nature. Talk about self-education -- delightful! So full of humor, too.

We have long been fans of Amateur Naturalist. In fact, I used it as a springboard for a Middle School Natural History course and it was wonderful, really inspiring a love and better understanding of Natural History in all of us! This is a book that stays out all the time at our house.
