Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have started a tree study this month, and something our evergreen tree is doing has us very curious. It is a huge evergreen (not sure which kind exactly) but for the past several weeks it seems to be giving itself a "trim" ...

At any given moment, a small length of branch will drop to the ground. The ground under the tree is covered with them. We thought at first some creature was doing this, but it seems the little branches are coming down on their own. The pieces are generally 4-6 inches in length and look really healthy, very green and soft. I don't remember the tree doing this before.

I hope this doesn't in some way show the tree in ill health ~ it is our absolute favorite tree in the world (we even have a name for it, Birdy).

Any ideas?

Sounds like a spruce. Not sure why, but this is common in spruce stands.

This is a great way to start our tree study - by finally figuring out what kind of evergreen this tree is!

Yes, I believe it is a spruce now that I have looked in a tree guide we have. I think it is a white spruce by the looks of the pinecones pictured here. I notice lots of little buds on our tree now so that must be a good sign!

Thanks, MacBeth!
