I just thought this was a lovely quote and wanted to share:
"Parents, teach your children to see nature, respect and protect it as a magnificent gift that presents to us the grandeur of the Creator! In speaking in parables, Jesus used the language of nature to explain to his disciples the mysteries of the Kingdom. May the images he uses become familiar to us! Let us remember that the divine reality is hidden in our daily lives like the seed in the soil. May it bear fruit in us!" ~ Pope Benedict XVI

I'm really glad you posted, Robin!!
How many times have I felt burdened, or overwhelmed, angst-ridden, or just plain blue...and found myself renewed and uplifted by a simple nature walk with the kids! Here's what the Holy Father said:
Quote:
"...revivify your spirits by contemplating the splendors of Creation." |
|
|
vivify = enliven or animate
....and isn't that how it works? There is no agenda. No plan. Just the beauty and splendor of Creation - and our spirit is enlivened, nurtured, soothed, softened. In nature, aware of God's amazing order and the Divine Imagination, one cannot help but be in awe!!
Thank you, Holy Father, for your encouragement to get into God's magnificent Creation!

I remember when our Holy Father was elected, and recall how many people said, "Why was he chosen?"
For just this one quote, his elevation to the Chair of Peter was worth it all...but Pope Benedict XVI has given us so much more.
Dear Heavenly Father, open our hearts to the message of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. In his 60 years of service to You, he has learned so much, and he offers his insights in complete humility and submission to Your Will. Grant that we may turn to You through the example of Pope Benedict XVI and be open to Your message and Your working in our lives. Bless us and bless all parents as we follow the example and encouragement of the Holy Father; help us to share with our children, relatives and friends our wonder and happiness as we encounter You in nature. May Your pathways become apparent to us as we contemplate the glory and wonder of Your creation, and may we strive to attain the greater glory You promise to those who love, follow and believe in You - the glory of eternal life in Heaven with the Trinity.
We humbly ask these things through Christ, Our Lord and Savior, who taught us that the smallest sparrow is important and that the youngest child matters. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord, we trust in Your mercy and know that our prayers are heard. Amen.

Lindsay just posted this in another thread. It is perfect and builds on what he said in this address last year. He really is the "nature study" pope.
CrunchyMom wrote:
Not sure if I should respond here or in the Nature Study thread, but in the Pope's most recent talk for the Year of Faith, he said that Practical Atheism Is More Destructive Than Disbelief As part of the remedy, he prescribes Nature Study
Quote:
In response to the ensuing moral and spiritual chaos, Pope Benedict called on all people to discover God by following three paths.
The first path involves contemplating creation. “The world is not a shapeless magma, but the more we know, the more we discover the amazing mechanisms, the more we see a pattern, we see that there is a creative intelligence,” the pontiff remarked. |

So let us celebrate the Year of Faith - through the study of nature - God's beautiful gift to us!
