Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I think it was Lissa that mentioned (maybe on her blog) about a naturalist Gale Lawrence called The Beginning Naturalist -- Weekly Encounters with the Natural World.

I got the one and only book by Ms. Lawrence out of our library and I love it! It's called A Field Guide to the Familiar: Learning to Observe the Natural World. Her chapters are divided by season, starting with the first frost and indian summer -- so it'd be easy to key the readings to the right time of year. She explains things like how to identify the type of Christmas tree, observiing Canada geese, shooting stars and how to observe edible plants.

The individual essays are about 3 or 4 pages long -- a nice pre-read to a nature walk!

I just got this book and started using it last week. I posted about it on my blog. It is wonderful! I was going to post about it here when I found this thread Mary started, so here I am just adding my .02 cents.

And I got this one and blogged about it this morning!
Great minds think alike!

My library has two of her titles. These look really promising.

I'm looking at it as a beginner in nature study, with a young one. Starting off with basics to me sounds like where we should be.

That's why we got 'em Jenn -- I'm definitely NOT a science or nature person....
