Ds just found a tick crawling up his belly. Don't forget to check for the little buggers after going into woods and fields.

Ugh, Theresa, we have been dealing with ticks here too. Dh had one attached to his arm so stubbornly it made him bleed when I yanked the stinker off.
We always get dog ticks in our yard until about midsummer, but this spring we're getting deer ticks from the woods ...

Agh! Ticks are one of my biggest fears--and tick checking all the children each night is so difficult. It's the one thing I dislike about the return of warm weather.

I have to plead with you - don't yank them off! Use the special tick pullers that look like a split measuring spoon or a 2 pronged metal fork to ease them out of your skin. Pulling with fingers or a misplaced tweezers or the use of chemicals (like nail polish or gasoline) results in the tick regurgitating its stomach contents into your bloodstream and this increases your chances of Lyme Disease. Three different tick removers are shown on this page. They can usually be found at a pharmacy for a few dollars. My doctor used to have a tub of removers for $2 on her counter. Buy several and use them. Please !

Jennifer, thank you for the link. I will be sure to buy a pair or two since we seem to be looking at quite a tick problem here for the next couple of months!
By the way, does anyone know how long it takes for that "bulls-eye" rash to appear after an infected tick bites you? Dh was bitten 2-3 weeks ago and nothing so far has appeared. Also we got the tick off within an hour of its attaching and as I understand it, it takes 24-48 hours for a tick to transfer the disease.
ick, ick, ick ... I hate those things!

Ugh!
We leave for our annual spring camping trip next week.
Did you have to remind me.

Dawn,
Only about 80% of people develop the bull's-eye rash which appears 1-2 weeks after being infected. Watch for flu-like symptoms: achy joints, intense headache, stiff neck, fever, severe fatigue which will progress into facial paralysis and varying neurological disorders like disorientation; confusion; dizziness; short-term memory loss; inability to concentrate, finish sentences or follow conversations.
Which was definitely the absolute worst part of the disease. A person can deal with pain but losing yourself daily is a frightening experience.
For more info here is the American Lyme Disease Foundation website.
I agree with you - triple ick! and Ugh!
It's the worst part of spring.

One thing a pediatrician told us was to save the tick in a bottle for a week or so, then the tick in question can be tested if there is any suspicion. That's what we have done, though, fortunately we have never had to have the tick tested. We seem to get ticks year round - even mid winter. The worst time was when one was actually in the 3 yo ear. I couldn't see well enough to tell whether it was just a scab or a tick so had to get my older ds to check and help get it out.

Good idea.
One's first impulse is to flush it down the tiolet.

It's rare that we find them here in south louisiana, but they are prevalent in the piney woods of north louisiana...at least at the camping sites.

I have seen them in February, on tables in libraries and on the floor ladies rooms . It is always tick season, and always tick habitat! We are pretty attuned to finding them quickly.
