Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Teaching Science... and Having Fun! By Felice Gerwtiz

I recently came across this book recommended at Cathy Duffy's site. It was in her Top 100 picks for homeschooling. My library did not have it and could not get it through ILL, so I splurged for a copy from Christian Book. I thought I was going to get the 1999 edition, but when it came it was the new 5th edition updated in 2008.

This is an interesting read for anyone who, like me, feels a bit science-impaired. Not that I don't love science, but I always feel helter-skelter in my approach and wonder if I am "teaching it right". Am I doing too much, too little? Where is that perfect program I can use, etc.

The author covers every aspect of teaching science (from setting up a lab to providing blank sheets on scientific method to fill out for each experiment). She covers all grades and provides a scope and sequence list for all grades, which I thought was very helpful to look at. She reviews and rates a very large number of science books on many topics, websites, material suppliers, etc.

She also walks you through how different approaches to teaching science look- the unit study vs the textbook approach vs various combinations.

This book has shown me ways I can start improving my own approach. Just reading through it has made me feel more organized and able to discern better what I need to be doing. I know I will be referring back to it often, especially as I start to think about next year. It's sort of a "road map", just the kind of thing I've been needing....

This sounds like just what I was looking for a few years ago!!!!

I feel roughly organized now, and even confident, but I might have to take a look at this book myself just to see if it helps any.
