Guess what? Mystery Class 6 is still at 24.00 photoperiod! They also used Mystery Class 6 for the first example of how to figure longitude.....

I just wanted to say we had so much fun figuring out the longitudes today -- I think the littles "got it" especially Thomas had fun running his finger down the map to see where the mystery cities could be based on the longitude. We also started talking about the North-South aspect based on the times of light....
This is a very cool project!

Mary G. did you notice on the atlas link I posted on the other thread that as you move the little curser icon around the maps it gives you exact latitudes and longitudes for the locations your are touching - see the bottom left hand corner of the browser screen (at least it does on our Internet Explorer).

Well, after today's clues we are pretty sure we have our city. DS was so thrilled to see the longitude clue point to exactly the city he had guessed last week from his research on sunrise times! This is great!

Hello all of you wise mommas. I have to admit defeat, ignorance or atleast permanently compromised brain cells....we seem to be always playing catchup with the Mystery Class.....here's the question:
I can't seem to figure out how we are to know what a location's latitude is from the sunrise/sunset date. Can anyone help?
Chagrined in SC,
Kathleen

I knew it,I knew it, I knew it....just give me a bit of time and I knew I'd find a picture book that would apply to this project:
On the Same Day in March: A Tour of the World's Weather by Marilyn Singer shows kids the different weather in cities throughout the world all on the same day in March. This helped my kids understand a bit about the changing seasons and what happens elsewhere when we have a late winter/early spring day here in Greenville.
I remember vaguely reading one last year where the narrator was taling to kids all over the world -- each double-page had a four-panel at the bottom showing what his friends were doing as he wrote to them....does this sound familiar to anyone? Maybe we read it in conjunction with How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World"?

Don't worry Kathleen, we've been struggling right along with you. This is one of those concepts that I have never been able to totally wrap my brain around; that's why I'm so thrilled about this project. We just look at our graph each week and marvel at it's order and predictability!
It helped us quite a bit to check out some books about latitude and longitude (I did a "keyword" search at the library) and use them with the globe in hand.
In addition, we've been following the tilt of the earth shifting at Earth View. It has helped us a great deal to visualize how the photoperiod is more steady at the equator and the rise or fall is greater the further away you go north or south.
For instance, find a photoperiod that matches your own. This is a clue that the mystery class is near your latitude. If the line on the graph is going up, it's latitude N and if it's going down, it's latitude S. If the photoperiod of your mystery class is going up but has increased with greater frequency than your hometown that's a clue that it's north of you (further from the equator).
Another idea is to take the photoperiod of your mystery class and go checking the sunrise/sunset times on the net until you get close. Sort of like hide-and-seek
It's helpful to click around on all the different hints and teaching tips at the Journey North site. We've printed our Longitude worksheets and are going to work on them today.
Boy, if I'm wrong about any of this, I sure am going to be

What really helped us at first was looking at the graphs and comparing the mystery sites to our hometown. Since I know the latitude of my hometown, I can look at the graph and see that all the sites above it are south of us, and all the sites below are north of us. In fact, you can rank the sites from north to south by going from the bottom of the graph up to the top, with the 12 hour line being the equator. The bottom line would be the north pole, while the top line would be...site 6!
Hope that helps!
