we have a spring fed stream running through our neighborhood. The kids and i went down today and tried to catch some minnows? There are some larger fish as well. Does anyone have some ideas of what we could do with the stream. I'm searching for a good book on fish we find in the stream etc. We live in southeast PA.

You could put some of the stream water in a jar and then put a few drops under the microscope and see what is living in there.

You could have the kids do some nature journalling, either drawing or taking pictures of the stream.

You could try to figure out a way to determine how fast the stream is flowing or keep a temperature chart of the water in the stream and then compare it to the air temperature. You could also perhaps keep track of the depth.

You could find out where the stream empties, and then what does that empty into and where does it all eventually end up.

You could read poems and stories about rivers and streams and then perhaps have the kids come up with
their own.

That pretty much covers language arts, math, science and literature! I'm sure others can think up more!

Just for fun-race sticks or different leaves down it!
To calculate speed: choose two points in the stream a good distance apart. measure the distance. drop an orange peel (best since it floats and is noticeable)in at one point, yell "Mark" to a person at the other point, he or she then starts a stopwatch, and stops it when the orange peel reaches the second point and answers "Twain". Mark Twain's name is from calculating speed of objects in the Mississippi River.
Formula: speed= distance/time.

This is just for fun, but you could kick off your study by reading the picture book The Raft. It's a favorite with my kids. We live by a river and after reading this book my kids wanted to build a raft. That never came to fruition, but they do keep a record of the various animals we see down there.
