Just got my copy of Faith and Family in the mail and they mentioned "The Old-Fashioned Strawberry Pot." They used the directions from PBS Victory Garden Strawberry Pot and
Tutorial. This is something I've always wanted to do, and this is a helpful approach.

Anyone do this at home? Any pointers, advice?

Hi Jenn,
I had a strawberry pot two summers ago because I thought it was a neat looking way to keep our strawberries all in one space since they seem to like to spread. I had two unfortunate problems:

Agressive squirrels ate all my little berries before they had a chance to turn red (they take one bite and leave the rest of the berries to rot

)

I decided to try again the next season and left the pot in the garage until the next spring where it froze and cracked...

I have not bought another but I can tell you that the berries grew wonderfully before the fluffy tailed rodents came into the picture! The pot did not seem to need to be watered too often because it was large and the berries do not have deep roots.

I had the same experience with a few plants in the garden. I thought they were bunnies or squirrels getting them. They grew so well, but we never got to taste one! I was wondering if a mesh cover would keep the little varmints off. Is that radical, covering a container plant with mesh? Can it be done?

I think it can be done. I have a friend who covered her entire garden with chicken wire cages to keep the critters away...she followed the book Square Foot Gardening by Mel (last name escapes me). I have also heard that cayenne pepper will keep the squirrels away. I know it works mixed with seed in our bird feeder. I add it to the bird seed as it does not bother the birds (no salivary glands...I think...maybe MacBeth would know) but the squirrels don't like it. I don't know how you would add it to your strawberry plants though!
