So we finally purchased some beautiful pasture land in the middle of nowhere, and hubby is building us a cabin. It is a 2-hr. drive from us, and will be used whenever we want - weekends, holidays, summer time. It is one room, with a 3/4 loft, a tub shower with hot water, a kitchenette. A "humanure" outhouse. Ahem.
I intend to have one bookshelf, with maybe 2 dozen carefully chosen books, primarily of a nature theme. My oldest child reads at a 6th grade level now. What are your favorites? Anything you would definitely want? TIA

Definitely local field guides.
A Year in the Maine Woods or Winter World by Bernd Heinrich
Aldo Leopold's wonderful Sand County Almanac (an all-time favorite here).
Poetry of Robert Frost
Thoreau's Walden
Good Earth Art (Mary Ann Kohl)

That is something we have talked about doing, and it is so encouraging to actually hear of someone else doing this successfully. Part of our challenge is the price of land around us, even withing a 2 hour radius, but I would love to hear more about this!
What about the Holling C. Holling books? Little House? Ralph Moody?

Another vote for field guides - trees and birds at a minimum.
Local history books (we had them at our cabin!).
A dutch oven cookbook.
A sketchbook, good pencils (and good erasers, and crayons for the little ones) and a sharpener.
What fun!

awesome, thanks! I will look into all of these, we already love the Little House books & Comstock.
I recently ordered Nature's Playground.
Hubby is the 5th generation to own this property. He is building it all by himself, with occasional volunteer help from friends or family. It is near all of his family, and when we visit them it is not easy for us to spend the night, now we will have our own place. We intend to plant a lot of trees & other plants, honeybees some day. Although we do have electricity there, dh plans on building his own windmill this summer, and then installing solar panels after that, with intentions of being fully off the grid. Real Learning. ;)

Well we of course lucked out because our cottage was my grandmothers house . Our books there are all very old . Only second hand ones come in as well .
We have all the old criket mags from when I was a kid . I have brought my ideals mags from home . An old set of raggedy anne books from the 30's or 40's .
my mum has added books on local birds and plant life . I discovered these great old mags of my grammas titled Atlantic Monthly it is fun to look at the old advertizements etc. so I reccommend looking for treasures to have at your treasured spot

That reminds me of a favorite book we kept in my parents' "Up North" house. Cecily G and the Nine Monkeys was always up there (and hadn't been reprinted at the time). I know this not about nature (at least not in the natural sense ), but it was a fun memory. Because we only made it there in the summer, I read it every chance I could!
