I third the Let's Read and Find Out series.
Also check out the Sylvan Dell catalog. These are available through most library systems, and they are beautiful books.

OK, another vote for the Let's read and find out series. Also, Magic School Bus is a huge hit here, but most especially the classic series by Joanna Cole & Bruce Degen. The TV episode ones don't have enough facts and explanations for my boys. Gail Gibbons is an author that we have liked for a lot of science/nature topics.

Other favorites are older books found in used book stores or at library sales. I'm pretty discriminating with choosing these books - a requirement is beautiful illustrations! Some of the older Golden Books are wonderful in the nature corner - one of our favorites is Pussy Willow by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Leonard Weisegard, 1951 (we have this copy.)

Yes, there are a lot, aren't there?
I second Gail Gibbons and Seymour Simon - although Seymour Simon's are often geared toward the older elementary. What ages were you thinking of when you asked about "young children," Pam?
HA Ray's star/constellation and astronomy books are good resources for children as well.

Well, the reason I'm thinking about it is that I am going to be doing Sonlight with my younger children and they have changed the science books in the early years. I have mixed feelings about the old Usborne books and the new ones they are using in Kinder and One look so easy and light.
So I was trying to remember what was good.
Wish I hadn't sold all my LRandFO books!
thanks
Pam
