Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was just reading a reading a recipe for bird treats that includes equal amounts of peanut butter and lard, melted and re-hardened with "dry" ingredients. Anyone have anything she must add to the mix to attract the birds? I like to add blueberries.

What do you add?

(A very large hawk landed in the tree across the street this afternoon. The sudden change in bird behavior was startling! Even the woodpeckers were still-as-stone until the hawk flew off. I hope I am not attracting birds just to feed a hungry hawk!)

MacBeth,
I just read, recently, that you should add grape jelly to that mix in order to attract orioles !!!

How about cracked corn as well.

MacBeth-
Blueberries sound really neat. What eats them in your yard? I know bluebirds like fruit, but we have little chance of those here. What else?

.....should have mentioned.....Clara is reading Make Your Own Bird-Houses and Feeders and it really is a great book for getting kids started with birding. Suggestions for bird food includes grapes, apples, bananas, and melon rinds. Raisins can be used if they are first chopped up and then softened in warm water.

Sounds like some birds are eating rather well.
