Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just checked out all kinds of fun-looking books on the Amazon site. Unfortunately, I can't shop in stores for these things being overseas. Therefore, I'd like your best educated opinions on the following books:

Attracting Butterflies & Hummingbirds to Your Backyard : Watch Your Garden Come Alive With Beauty on the Wing (A Rodale Organic Gardening Book)

Attracting Birds to Your Backyard : 536 Ways To Turn Your Yard and Garden Into a Haven For Your Favorite Birds (A Rodale Organic Gardening Book)

Gardening with Children (Paperback) by Beth Richardson

Sharon Lovejoy books (Roots Boots, Trowel and Error etc.)

Oh, and now MacBeth has to entice me with those Henry (Hikes to Fitchburg, Climbs a Mountain, Builds a Cabin, House, and Louisa and) books!

Hi Tina,

Gardening books are on my mind too! My birthday is later this week and I am hoping to order a new one (or two!) to get the springtime juices flowing, although here in New England we have MILES to go before spring!

I have a few of the Lovejoy books which I absolutely love and return to for inspiration and cute ideas for gardening with the kids. I would say Roots and Shoots is my favorite of hers. I like the looks of the Trowel and Error book though and may have to pop that one in my amazon cart!

I don't have any of the others but Attracting Birds to your Backyard looks wonderful. My boys gave me a St. Francis garden statue last year on Mother's Day and it has been my goal to create a wildlife-friendly garden around him.

I had a St. Francis Garden Statue. The wind blew him over and he broke fairly cleanly in half. There were issues with his face and hands breaking, too. We couldn't glue him back together.    I'm going to have to remember next time I get a garden statue, if ever, to put it in a sheltered place.

I thought I'd bump this thread again (though those of you who just got dumped on with the big storm probably aren't thinking "spring".).

There was a posting on CCM aboutThe Gardening with Kids Store and there are tons of great looking books at the site.

You had specifically asked about the Attracting Birds to Your Backyard book. I kept meaning to post. We have it checked out from the library. It is a really informative book. At first I found it confusing to use because it is arranged alphabetically more like a birding/gardening dictionary and not topically as I would have expected. I tend to like things grouped together by topic. But is has a good index so I've been able to find my topics fine. What's nice about it is that it is a combination bird identification/information book on common birds as well as a how-to and bird habitat development book.It would be a good resource to have around.

18 inches of snow later, and it's still snowing.... So much for that solar bird feeder today. I had Don go out and wipe it off, but an hour later, it's useless again.

Spring? Gardening? You should have asked me in January! .

I love books on landscaping and gardening for wildlife. This sort of approach lends a great new dimension to time spent out of doors. The Rodale books are pretty straight-forward, and the Lovejoy books are fun, too.

Oh, and the Henry books are great...funny and sweet, and always thought provoking.

We're knee deep with 10-12 inches here...pretty good for VA! I always want to beat MA and NY records, but alas, the location of our little state doesn't usually win in Nor'easters!

We just dug the ruler out of the snow on our deck and I'm guessing 12-14" so far. They say we could get 20" and that this storm is a true blizzard! We made sure to stock the feeders yesterday so the birds are flocking like crazy .

Attracting Birds to Your Backyard looks really nice. It looks similar to one of my favorites ~ The Backyard Bird Feeder's Bible ~ which is also alphabetically arranged and so well loved it's coming apart at the seams! It's also a Rodale book.

What I like about both these books are the suggestions for bird-friendly gardening and especially the recipes for making homemade bird feeder treats. I always mean to try them out, but so far have not ~ story of my life !

Oh, just think how happy those little birdies will be when the snow stops and they find your nice feeder when everything else is buried. We lived in No VA for a few years and I so miss the wonderful eastern birds that visit feeders. Western birds definitely lack the color and diversity of the eastern birds.

Oh......now I get it. I always wondered why I never had all the great luck so many of the other ladies did with the beautiful birds....it's because I'm a westerner!
