Does anyone have a good alternative to National Geography Kids?

NG Little Kids is too light for my 5 year old - I thought about moving him up to NG Kids, but there are too many cartoony type things - I really want something LIKE National Geographic, without the price and more at a child's level - but still with the MEAT and the coverage of various topics.

I've looked Ranger Rick and others - but these seem to only focus on animals - some only on science. I want something with geography, culture, science, etc. Not every issue, but a variety of topics throughout the year.

If only NG would take their full issue, leave out the political correctedness, and create a young child's version of their full expanse each month, add some science/art/project suggestions for hands-on exploration and call it good. I've suggested it to them. STill waiting....    Or even to take what they have and add more meat - more information.

Anyone?
