Hello,
I'm looking for a well illustrated plants book that shows lovely illustrations or photos of all the plants in the plant family including moss, lichen, algae, seaweed, grasses, flowering plants, vegetable plants, and the like.
Does anyone happen to know if a book meeting this criteria exists? :)

Either one, really. I'd just like a book with good illustrations of the above things - the content of the text isn't that important. I want us to be able to study and draw from some really good illustrations or even photos of they're cleanly done.
I hope that makes sense! :)

Lauri, I have been thinking about your requst since I was searching myslef for some flower field guides and taxonomy books. I came across a couple general plant books that might be promising and I requested them from our library. I'll psot again after I get them and have a chance to see what they are like.

Well, to be honest, I think you will have some trouble finding a book that covers all of these because algae, seaweed, and lichen are not plants.
Algae are protists and seaweed are algae (and therefore also protists).
Lichen are a symbiotic relationship between an algae and a fungus.
So we are talking two entirely different kingdoms from plants.
Now, you should be able to find a general biology reference text that covers these three kingdoms (as well as animals, monerans,and archaea) and you can just use the parts you need. But it may suit your needs better to look for an excellent individual plant book and then supplement with books on algae and lichens.

That's good to know, Theresa. My Golden Guide to Botany by Taylor Alexander pub. 1970, has Thallophytes: bacteria, fungi and algae listed as Simple Plants. (p.14) It has a really beautiful tree on p 14 - 15 showing the plant kingdom with Bacteria, Fungi, Brown-Line Algae, Vascular Plants, Bryophytes, and Green-Line algae as branches, with mini branches . It's such a beautiful picture, I was going to have my son put it in his notebook. Do you think it's out of date, though? If Algae, etc. are no longer considered plants, I don't want to teach him out of date science.

That is a lovely picture but, yes, unfortunately it is outdated. Don't feel bad. Many modern dictionaries still define bacteria as simple plants! It's outrageous, really.
