Now that winter has set in and my family is such that I have two olders (7 and 4) AND a baby, I need some advice.
What do you do about the baby (currently 5 mo old) and the cold snowy/wet weather? How much cold can a baby really handle? I'm bundling her up but the cold on her face and breathing the cold, dry air is what worries me. She has a pretty strong constitution, better than my dd4, but what can babies really handle as far as the weather goes? How do you all handle this?

Amie, I think the baby can handle more if she is in a back carrier (or front carrier if she is small or does not sit up yet) than in a stroller. I never used a stroller on nature hikes because they are hard to maneuver (picture Alice, with help, hauling a tandem stroller over a large fallen tree--can't go under, can't go around it, must go over it...  ). In the winter, close contact is a great source of warmth. Just watch for signs of distress.

And none of us with a camera! I'm still bummed about that!
For a five month old, I would use a front holding Baby Bjorn carrier along with a Carrier Cover.

Oh yes, I _wear_ my baby everywhere and for everything in a sling up close and hardly ever use a stroller...I was just wondering how long a baby can be out? I feel guilty for taking her out at all.
At 40 degrees is 30 minutes too much/too little? Is it sensible to take her out at 32 degrees or lower at all? What about when it is windy...what do you do? Are there some sensible parameters?
Pink to red cheeks, watery eyes all make me concerned. Whould it be best if her face was blocked from the elements all together (or probably she'll want to see what is going on)?
Have you been out in the snow w/the olders while baby is with you? And for how long? I feel irresponsible taking her out all but life does have to go on!
Perhaps I should cross post in "loving the little ones" too.

I don't like to take mine out if it's below freezing or there is rain. I try to take my ques from the baby. I have had some that complain at the littlest distress and some that were so stoic I had to watch them carefully for signs of distress.
From day one my current baby becomes unraveled as soon as we set foot outside. She hates it, it's so funny. I 've had one like this before and now that child can hardly be dragged in out of a storm.
Fortunately, my older children can watch the younger ones out of doors so I don't have to make her miserable.

I've completely zipped a baby up in a sling in my down coat. I've also put my stroller in a reclined position, bedded it with my husband's down coat, laid the baby in it and zipped him up in it, leaving breathing holes, obviously. I think babies are easier thann ddlers/preschool age because they actuall get their faces, hands, etc. into the elements.
Get a big down coat and zip them in it!
I don't think babies should be out with their skin exposed to the elements. I would follow your instincts on the pink cheeks/watery eyes idea.
But they do great covered.

Sarah's got a great idea with zipping babies up in a down coat with you. In fact, that's what mom's in the arctic do! In a parka with mom, baby is cozy, comfortable and warm. Make sure that baby's head is close to yours and able to breathe easily...
Personally, I like to wait until baby's 3 months old before heading outdoors for more than 10 minutes. Especially on cold windy days (which are plenty here in southern Saskatchewan - just north of Montana).
