Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have had fun with carrots and swallowtail larva. If you want to know more I've posted about it on my blog:

Carrot Patch

We have done this for quite a few years now and while I am no expert, I might be able to answer some questions about how we do it, at least. . .if you have them.

Its a good time to plant carrots. . .

We plant parsley for them and always have caterpillars in abundance, but they eat the plants to the ground and move on before they make their cocoons so we have never had the chance to see them turn to butterflies.

Does this happen to you also or do they stick around in your garden? Is it just a matter of planting MORE parsley (seems like I would just get more caterpillars)?

Yeah, we have never seen them make a crysalis (cocoon) outdoors either. They flee to find a safe spot. The only way we have seen it is to hand rear a couple indoors. We just keep feeding them carrots in a jar with a stick. After a while and lots of growth they crawl to the top of the stick and make their crysalis. Then they hatch out and we release them.

That is really cool, Sarah. We'll have to give it a try and see if we can attract some. For many years we had good luck with Painted Ladies on our Hollyhocks, but not recently. It is really exciting to hand raise those as well.
