We have enjoyed putting out the suet cakes in the wire cages and watching for a wider selection of birds to visit them. Our first one was knocked down off of the tree, but we found it several yards away. A few days later, it was off again and we couldn't find it anywhere. It was a small one: about 4X6X2, so we thought that maybe a squirrel? or something made off with it. We bought a much bigger one that is intended for seed cakes about 6X9X3 and continued to put the little suet cakes into it. The birds could get the suet, but not the squirrels.

Well, this morning, we noticed that it too is gone and we can't find it anywhere.

It hooks onto a tree branch, and we had it hooked onto a thick branch for a tight fit. Even if the wind could have blown it off (and we haven't had any wind to speak of) you would think it would be laying in the general area of the tree.

So, who could be carting these away?

I don't know, but they're at my house too. My son finally used twist ties to wire the holder shut. That worked.

We have had squirrels getting ours! Two loses in the last two months. They took the whole cage. One the last one they broke the age off the chain!

Yes, they are taking the whole thing - suet cake and cage. We thought it may have been squirrels with the small one, but I don't think they could manage carrying the big one. Raccoons make sense - although we haven't seen a raccoon here in several years. Do you think a deer would take them?
