Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know there is 8" of snow outside in VA - but I need to start thinking of my Mary Garden. I have no huge gardening projects this spring or summer - but I need a complete redo of the Mary Garden as it had gotten really untidy last year and I pulled everything up.

The garden is in our front beds which are mostly in the shade - which rules out a lot of "Mary" plants.

Does anyone have any good ideas for what good shade loving plants would be good. Here is a picture of our Mary Garden last year - not a big space. (it was so cool - you can see some wild bluebells that came up just in front of our Blessed Mother!!)

This is sort of a tangent question Marilyn, but I was hoping to begin a Mary Garden this Spring. What flowers do you have planted?

Mary's Gardens is the best place online to find plants with Marian themes. Definitely check out this page for a quick list of plants/bloom times/heights/religious names.

Mary's Flowers has been a beautiful book to plan and meditate on.

I hope these resources help.

Marilyn, specific to your question...I would pick bleeding hearts.

Betsy,
Thanks for the Mary Garden link, what a lof of great info. We plan to do a container Mary garden on our deck this year. Although my son wants it to be a "saint garden".

Any suggestions on good places to order outdoor saint statues?

My husband and son (who will be 5 in May) were having fun brainstorming on this last night. They got most excited about having a St. George pot w/snapdragons! :)

Thanks Betsy. Actually I had bleeding hearts before - and I was thinking of getting some again.

Kacky - Abby had made me a list a couple of years ago of all the flowers with significance for Mary Gardens - I just can't find it I will email if I do.

I was going to recommend this book, but Betsy beat me to it!

I second this book, Marilyn and Kacky!!! If you can borrow it from the library, great...if not, it's worthwhile to have in your home library! If you're looking for flowers and their Marian significance, this is the book!!! All my Mary gardens were planned from this book!
