I've been attracted to Charlotte Mason's ideas for homeschooling for some time. We've incorporated some of those things into our days already. I would like to do more incorporating! My question is about high school science. Up to this point, we've used Apologia's textbooks (General & Physical) and to tell the truth, my kids loathe it (neither are science oriented). I didn't know what other curriculum was out there. Just yesterday, I was searching online and saw MaryBeth's Highschool science where she mentions 'real books' and other things (including labs from Castle Heights Press - thank you).
Okay - so specifically (I guess this is really addressed to MaryBeth) - could you give me an example of 'how' you use the books and labs for Biology? What does your typical day look like? The books you've listed for Biology on your website look wonderful, but I'm sure that you don't use ALL of them during the year?
Just not sure where to start. We were planning on starting our Biology section in mid Dec/Jan.
Thanks so much.

I have a freshman and eighth grader who are doing Apologia while holding their nose..and they like science. I don't know what it is, just a little much...My high schooler feels like the experiments are dumbed down, and laborious when the outcome is already evident....that said, I KNOW there are others who love it, so I am not trying to dis it, just empathazing.
I would LOVE to hear about other's hs science CM style!

I am all ears as well- Nature study has been a hit here, but I can't seem to work any other science into our days (and have two middle schoolers!)

We need the information to this as well. I LOVE MacBeth's lists, but I just can't figure out how to make it into a set plan.
My friend is a high school science teacher, and HATES Apologia Biology, so though our oldest used it, our second son used Prentice Hall (borrowed from her). She didn't mind the Apologia Chemistry as much, so we ended up using that, and he's using the Apologia Physics. But our daughter won't use any of them, as they won't work for her.
So I NEED to figure out a Charlotte Mason high school science plan for her.

Nedra, that sounds awesome.
Here's where I tend to fall short -- I can look at your awesome lists or the suggestions in High School of Your Dreams that seem great. . .but I can't seem to turn these into weekly or daily plans. I'm never sure how many pages to assign of which materials, how many labs to assign and when, on and on.
Do you just give him the list and tell him these are the things you'll be covering and work out an order/process with him?

I decided not to use Apologia chemistry for my 2nd high schooler after my oldest didn't like it either. We are "real life" people, and even though I try to make high school include a bit more bookwork for the sake of preparing for college, it was a waste!
I, too, enjoyed MacBeth's lists of chemistry but couldn't put it into practice either. What I am doing this year for my daughter is using "The Elements" Even though it says it is for grades 4-8, it is fun and very understandable for us. It includes games and is very hands-on! I am also including a lot of experiments from various books I found at the library. (Search the J540.78 section of your library!)
I also have The Teaching Company's chemistry DVD set from last year with my son, so I am having her do that, too, to make sure she gets more than the elementary info.
We are going to read Chemistry of a Candle and the other living book about the periodic table.
Hope this helps!
