Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

To read how NOT to do nature study ... check out our first attempt for this school year!

Dh had some great advice for us ... especially just doing it bit by bit rather than trying to "do it all" in an hour!

Happy reading

Too funny Mary. I like your dh's idea. Although I have to say, when I read the part when he said you should bring the leaves home to id...I thought you were going to say that he said "bring the leaves home and I'll do it with the kids"...HA!

So funny. You are not alone in this. Our first nature day was Tuesday and things did not go as I planned either.

Your husband's plan of regrouping and getting right back out there is the way to go.
You'll probably surprise yourself with how well it goes next time.

Your dh has a great plan, Mary! I like the idea of going to the same place over and over again to really *get to know* it.

Great post, Mary!

I think your dh hit on something helpful, too. A couple of years ago, I encouraged the children to search out one single tree to adopt. We visit it frequently, but at least once during each of the 4 seasons. They sketch it, examine fruit, leaves, bark, growth. They began to become very observant, watching their trees for signs that the drought last year might have had on them. They really get to know their tree (as well as the tree's environment - shade, sun, is it a home to small creatures?, mushrooms, neighbors of the tree)! At the onset of the new year, I encourage them to adopt a new tree.

It looks like you have a beautiful place to enjoy nature!

Not sure if you've seen these, Mary, but I thought I'd share some of our favorite resources for id...

Happy tree hunting!!!
