I printed out the Gray Squirrel Project to do with my kids this year, but I haven't seen any squirrels in our yard. Is it too early? I think we usually have lots of them around here at this time of year -gray ones and black ones. Many years they have destroyed our pumpkins by now. Do you have any idea why they're not around?

Hi Cheryl,
We moved to a new house in May and we haven't seen a squirrel since we moved in (even though we have well-stocked bird feeders ) . The local news reported that there are Fisher Cats in our area, so I'm wondering if that explains it.

We have no fishers (how cool would that be??), so I guess that's why all the squirrels are here, right now, in my yard, eating everything from acorns and black walnuts to suet from my feeder.
But seriously, we have no shortage here...perhaps someone has a more attractive food source and is attracting them. Maybe you could try going to a park, and doing the observation there...
How about red squirrels, Cheryl? I have not done the project with reds, but I have always wanted to have the time to watch them (we have no reds on LI).

We've had tons of squirrels, the norm here. They are out in full force here in Buffalo, NY. I even saw a dead one the other day!

AFter the hurricane, squirrels were running all over the broken trees, searching for their homes.
They finally just left. We haven't seen any since the storm's aftermath.
Corey did find a dead one under a large branch of the pecan tree that fell by my patio. Poor thing was flat as a pancake. What a way to go.

Have not seen as many squirrels and deer this year but turkeys! Always see a flock on the road to our house.
Squirrels are rarely a problem for our feeders thanks to 5 outside cats. The chipmunks from across the street stay away too.

I'm seeing plenty of squirrels in VA area, but when I visit my m-i-l in Central PA, there weren't that many running around. She had a plethora of acorns and no squirrels scrambling to pick them up. Only a few came around. It was a puzzlement to me!

Still no squirrels here, even with carved pumpkins on our steps. I've been thinking about what's changed - there's some trees my dh had taken down last spring, we have stinkhorns and last year a squirrel died in our toilet and for awhile a big, fat gray squirrel sat on our deck and looked in our slider door window. I haven't seen any squirrels in my neighbors' yards either though and they're usually everywhere.
MacBeth, I'm going to take your advice and go to a park. You asked about red squirrels...I haven't seen those around here ever, just black and gray. Actually, my hometown (Westfield, Ma) sells shirts and sweatshirts with "The Black Squirrel" on them.

We have loads of grey squirrels both front and back of our house. One of our neighbours feeds the squirrels in a large sycamore tree at the front of our houses. She has feeder pot on the tree, and the regular inhabitants (used to be two, but she thinks two more have realised this tree is a good place to be!) are now pretty tame. They are very busy these days burying peanuts in everyone's front lawns.
Question for MacBeth: are British grey squirrels the same as American grey squirrels?

I believe we gave them to you as a thank you gift for all the starlings and English sparrows .

How kind . I like squirrels better than starlings and sparrows. It's a shame they pushed out the red squirrels though.

Yes, it certainly does . It sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock movie plot!
