Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have any great fitness books or resources for teaching fitness/pe at home? I was going to do the homeschool pe here but its only once a week (and at a bad time for us) and I'd rather do something every day ....

Also.....anyone have any good on-line sources for good sports/P.E. equipment???? I'm tired of buying the junk at Target, Big 5, GI Joe's, etc.....and have it trashed.

I want a few school-quality items that are durable.

I'm not sure of where to get them, but occupational therapy equipment is great for PE.

Don't know if this would fit the bill but there's the Presidential Fitness Program -free info online and homeschoolers can participate and earn the patches.

Anyhow, here's the link

http://www.presidentschallenge.org/

Don't know if I did the link correctly but I'll post and see. If not google presidential fitness and it comes up.

Our library has The Ultimate Homeschool Physical Education Game Book on the shelf, but I've never checked it out yet! Maybe it'll be close to what you're looking for, Mary?

I don't have it, but one of the books on the CHC list is
Homeschool Physical Fitness by Dr. Bruce Whitney. It might be worth looking at.

(As a side note, how do you do a link?)

We have this book and use it quite a bit. I like it. The author is a PE teacher in the public schools who had lots of HS parents bring their children to school for his PE classes. It's an answer to the question, "Mr. Bailey, are there PE games we can play with our children at home that are fun, easy to teach, and do not require a gym or expensive equipment?"

The book is divided up into these sections:

**Basketball Games
**Football Games
**Soccer Games
**Softball Games
**Racquet and Net Games
**Recreational Sports (croquet, bocce, frisbee golf, etc)
**Playground Games (4-square, kickball, tetherball, etc)
**More P.E. Games (with a homeschool twist)
**Fitness Building Games
**Rope Jumping Activities

Each of these sections has anywhere from 10-20 games/versions/drills/variations. There are games for individuals, pairs and groups of children.

Each of the games lists:
**an introduction and purpose
**Number of players
**Suggested age level
**Equipment needed
**How to play
**Variations

Here are the games listed in the BASKETBALL SECTION:

Around the World
Basketball Golf
Basketball king of the dribblers
Basketball Pirate
Basketball Red Light-Green Light
Basketball Tag
Bull in the Ring
Got Ya
Five Passes
Horse
No Dribble Basketball
One-on-one Basketball
Two on two
Triple Action Basketball
Knock Out Twenty-one

(Who knew there were so many fun things to do with a basketball? )

Then:
Appendix A: Keeping Children Physically Fit
Appendix B: Nat'l Standards in Physical education
Appendix C: Information and Resources

HTH,

I've got the Ult Guide on hold at the library and will try and track down the CHC book ... I need to look at it first else I end up with TONS of books I have to get rid as I don't ever use 'em

I have had this for years. It has games and labs (like soccer kick lab, baseball swing lab) for children K - 12. In the front is an outline for covering PE over 40 weeks. It is a great resource to have to fall back on when you are completely out of ideas.

Wow ... this sounds like exactly what I'm looking for .... and it looks like Amazon has a revised copy of Dr. Whitney's book due out at the end of August! 40-weeks of lesson plans -- I'm all over it!

Mary,
Here are a couple of websites that may be a help in your putting together a program for home this year. They may at least supplement what you're going to use...

(You can make this work for your levels easily)
Really EXCELLENT FREE HS P.E. Curriculum to download
Movement Cards that go with that program

PE Central Website
PE Central Lesson Plan Page

Sports Media

Physical Education Lessons

I hope these may help some.

Thanks Tracy! Those online links are great. I've pre-order the new Dr. Whitney book, but until that comes, I'll use the free stuff.....
