Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Some type of horse fly. Wiki's picture looks almost exactly like yours.

And they bite.

The other day my god-child (2 yo girl) and one of her sisters (4 yo) came in from outside. They said there was a turtle outside. I went to investigate and they showed me a huge cicada-looking fly (dead on the driveway). I was laughing so hard at the turtle. (How could something that large be a fly! I don't think they still believe me that it was a fly. )

I forgot to look it up - now I know what it is!

Yeah... I *thought* I'd seen a horse fly on several occasions... until I actually *did* see one. They are much bigger than I realized!

Glad you all didn't have too personal an experience, Joann!

And the size of the welt when the horse-fly bites is amazing. I was in a marsh once with a friend who had taken off his shirt when he felt the bites, revealing FIVE huge welts on his back (each about two inches across).

I should have asked my son first. When I showed it to him he knew what it was and offered his favorite piece of horse fly trivia. Horse flies are known to suck the blood of alligators and crocodiles. How fun. LOL

Glad all is well.
