I've picked up Keeping a Nature Journal by Clare Walker Leslie as recommended by many for ideas on keeping a nature notebook.
I was wondering if there are any other titles by Clare Walker Leslie that you would recommend. If so, how different are they from the above title? The Art of Field Sketching or Nature Drawing? Are those more how-to on the drawing?
I know these are for me to learn and distill. Do you find her works help and encourage you to keep nature journals? Is this over the head of someone who needs more of a "Nature Journal and Sketching for Dummies"?
I'm trying to whittle down my Amazon cart, so I don't mind anyone "talking me down" to convince me NOT to buy.

Do you already have Karen Rackliffe's "Wild Days?" I own almost every title by Clare Walker Leslie, but I think that "Wild Days" was more useful. I have another book I just picked about keeping a nature journal in the Northwest that is GREAT, but it might not be useful to you in the east...oh, oh and I just got a beautiful one for my birthday, I'll go look at the cover...

I have her Nature Journal and I love it. It is an actual nature journal for you to use, with a section of drawing techniques at the beginning and end, and tips sprinkled throughout.
It is the nature journal I use now, and when I fill it up, I expect to get the same one again, I like the format so much.

Jenn, my ds used Nature Drawing last year as part of the Natural History curriculum with MODG. He really did well with it and I was quite impressed with how much his drawing improved. I highly recommend the book ... someday, I hope to be able to use it myself!
We have some of her other books ... Keeping a Nature Journal and her Nature Journal. I am away from my books now  , but I love all of her books (and so have the children). I'll let you know when I return home.

The Painted Garden is the book I just got. It doesn't have any tips, but it has inspired me to do our nature journaling a little differently this year. We are going to try a family perpetual journal.

Y'know, I had Claire Walker Leslie's books and ended up getting rid of them ... they seemed over the top and more arty than I can be.
I really like Jim Arnosky's Drawing from Nature, Drawing Life in Motion or his series that includes Sketching Outdoors in Autumn -- all of which are in PWC's library system if you want to check them there first.

Yes, thanks! I have them on hold already, Mary. I've checked them out a few times. I think I need even more basic and hand holding because I don't know how to draw, or am totally intimidated.
