may destroy ripe tomatoes , but generally the tomato will still be on the plant, but with nibbles taken out. I was also told at the time that birds (mockingbirds and jays specifically in our area) can do a "fly by" taking a swipe at ripe tomatoes and fruit, but that would not explain your tomatoes being found in another area.
