Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd and her cousin have been collecting lizards and such in a jar. They put some grass in there and catch bugs for it to put in the jar and put a bottle cap with water. I do not like this. I have told my dd that if God intended for the lizard to live in a jar He would have put them there.
I will kill a roach or a fly in my kitchen so I am not of the extreme nature...I don't think.
Do you let your little ones keep things like this for longer than immediate viewing and learning?
Just wondering if I need to get over it and let my dd catch her critters.

I let my kids keep lizards, frogs, turtles and such for a few hours, no more. I don't want them to suffer. Tadpoles and caterpillars, however, we do like to keep longer to watch them grow. But always with the utmost care.

We do exactly what Theresa just described. At the moment I have a large bowl of tadpoles on my kitchen counter, which has been the sum total of science in our house for the past few weeks. Not only do we love watching the tadpoles, but the other pond life which has cropped up (tiny snails, plus what I'm sure are mosquito larvae, and some other itty-bitty swimmy things) is fascinating as well. I need to pull out the microscope!

But the rule is that if/when the tadpoles turn into frogs, the frogs go free.

Actually, my kitchen counter is turning into quite the aquarium -- we have the tadpoles in one bowl and, in another, the lone surviving bait minnow from my husband's and two sons' fishing trip yesterday, which my 5yo brought home as a pet. I don't feel too badly about keeping a bait minnow in captivity . . .
