Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I posted a photo on my blog with the story of two morning doves who were snatched up by a hawk. The nest was abandoned and two wee white eggs left in it, but it's not very secluded and we're wondering what would you do about them? Would you disturb them, let nature take its course or would you bury them, or ??? Thoughts? You can take a look at them on my blog. They are sitting in a fir tree only about four feet off the ground. I'm wondering about wildlife getting to them or will the hawk return again for them? Hmmmm.....

Oh dear - I'm very sad about your morning doves. I had seen the photos earlier on the blog They were so sweet.

Since they have been without incubation so long they are no longer living and developing. If you leave them something is going to steal them to eat them so you might as well donate them to science - homeschool science that is. If you and the kids think you would be okay with it, you could dissect them. It is very interesting to see what the stage of development would be. This site shows an example of a class that did this with an abandoned duck egg. It really is fascinating.

How long had the parents actually been sitting on the nest? I'm wondering how developed they might be.

We had a similar situation today (long story), and decided to leave the eggs for the local raccoons. That's what would happen if we had never seen them. If they were eggs of a more endangered species, I might have taken them in and made an attempt, but doves are so common, and it is a chore to raise altricial young.

So sorry to hear about your birds...but I hope some young hawks are thriving .

So sorry I wasn't able to return to further this discussion but I have to tell you Mary, that website was great. Thanks for passing it along. MacBeth, I loved your though about the young hawks eating well, for they sure are.

Our eggs were just under one week old, not incubated for long. We decided to leave them there, not on purpose, just that our lives have been turned upside down this past week since I posed. One of the eggs fell from the nest and was smashed and eaten? The other is still there so we may do something with it yet. :-)
