Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

if you had a 10 yr old dd who wanted to learn about the oceans in general what would you do? I like the idea of some sort of model, but I have no idea how to go about implementing the idea. Any and all ideas welcome.

Thanks

I'll try to think of some ideas, Molly, but I just couldn't help but notice that only pregnancy would have a mom up and thinking about ocean models at 3 am!

How much room do you have?
Once when I was teaching middle school science I had my 6th graders make ecosystem models. The catch was that the models were like museum dioramas--life size, and you could step into them and interact with them. Each group of 3-4 kids had a 4X4 foot section of the classroom to use for their model. They turned out very cool and were a big hit at the open house. Anyway, the group that chose the coral reef had a fantastic diplay, built of chicken wire covered with paper mache and a blue plastic shower curtain all around, They strung fish from the ceiling and made tissue paper anemones with little sculpey clownfish, it was really awesome. They also ha a little boombox hidden underneath with the sounds of the ocean playing in the background.
The group that did the deep ocean had similar set-up, but had a black curtain hung around, with a black-light inside and glow-in-the dark fish and jellyfish hanging around. The tube worms were made of clothes dryer hose painted with glow paint and some sort of stuffed tentacles coming out. Also very cool.
Anyway, they had to label everything in the dioramas with informational signs for their guests to read, like a museum, and be prepared to give "guided tours" as well.
It was one of my favorite projects at that school!

I have a set of several simple demonstrations for oceanography that are meant to prepare kids for using real equipment on a research vessel...they are fun and informative. I'll see if can get them posted or e-mail them to you later this afternoon. It has been a while since I did the classroom thing .

Mother of Divine Grace recommends Oceans for Every Kid for their Ocean study in Earth Science.    This includes a lot of neat ways to understand the ocean.

I love the idea from Theresa- that sounds very hands on!

Is'nt that the truth    I found some cool maps of the oceans and some web sites, I need more geared towards children.

My little one has mnay delays so she needs little reading and lots of hands on type learning.
