Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We read The Big Snow this morning. If that book doesn't drive a person outside in the snow, I don't know what book will.

Though today was freezing, I bundled up the kids (you should've seen my Celia in her multicolored fleece snowsuit with the point at the top of her hood. She looked elfish), stashed some important things in our backpacks, and headed to the North Ogden Nature Reserve. We spent an hour searching for animal tracks and scat, analyzing possible animal markings on trees, and climbing somewhat treacherous ... considering I was carrying the heaviest backpack and toting a two-year-old ... mountain trails. The kids are writing away in their nature journals today to tell of our adventure.

Then we went to a flatter nature center. We bought a Christmas exchange gift and saw a lovely bird which my oldest daughter sketched on a paper bag. We have yet to identify it because I can't find my Utah specific bird guide. Just as regards size and beak, I'd guess it was some type of falcon.

I was using the MODG books for 5th, 7th, and 8th grade last semester. I thought my older kids needed more structure and to learn more chemistry/physics verbiage. It all but killed my kids' love of science. We're back to doing science the way God intended. We're all so happy about this change.
