Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Normally, I would never dream of killing a caterpillar. However, I just found one crawling across our kitchen floor. I think it was in some hanging plants that I brought in.
I looked it up, and we already made a cozy spot in a jar with a wet paper towel and some leaves. :-)
Well, the bad news is that it is a cutworm or saw worm, and it eats emerging fruit shoots/buds. They winter over as larva, so it could go outside now and be fine. BUT... The hanging plants were right next to my apple/cherry/pear trees!
I cannot in good conscience just put it outside, where it could multiply and cause problems with my fruit. My first thought is to relocate it, but I am concerned with putting this problem on someone else. I would not want someone else to have these critters eating their fruit!
So, should we kill it?
How can we do this and have it be a true science lesson and not upset everyone so badly??
We do not spray our fruit trees, so I guess we have already caused a problem. Now I guess we have to check our trees for these caterpillars.

Any ideas on doing this humanely, or an alternative that doesn't hurt anyone's fruit?

In Christ,

Well, we never received any advice, but then we sort of forgot about the poor guy. He was alive when we checked, but then was dead yesterday. I am sure he has lots of relatives out there, munching my fruit buds!
